The violent post election clashes in Kenya resulting from the disputed Presidential Elections on the 27th December, 2007, were by and large countrywide but the Rift Valley and our target communities were specifically and adversely affected. Over 600 lives have been lost according to official count the majority of who are from the Rift Valley. So far we have established that Two Hundred and & Thirty-seven (237) people from Kalenjin community were killed with most shot by police using live bullets and/or hacked and burned to death by marauding gangs. The deaths were Five (5) at Kabarnet, Twenty-Six (26) in Matunda, Fifteen (15) in Kimumu-Eldoret (This includes world champion athlete Lucas Sang), Eleven (11) in Langas-Eldoret, Five (5) at Huruma-Eldoret, Two (2) in Maili Nne-Eldoret, Fifteen (15) in Ziwa, Fifty-four (54) in Kericho, Six (6) in Mauchei, Four (4) in Molo, Three (3) at Elburgon, Eight (8) in Kuresoi, Seven (7) in Bomet, One (1) in Kapsabet town, One (1) in Kapsosur, Six (6) in Burnt Forest, One (1) in Kitale, Three (3) at Kipkarren, Twenty-eight (28) at Mt. Elgon, Seven (7) in Endebbes, Eight (8) at Kachibora, Ten (10) in Meteitei and Eleven (11) in Naivasha.
Many other people were maimed and now in hospitals or recuperating at home for lack of finances for proper medical care. Homes were burned rendering thousands of people Internally Displaced. Several buildings and residential houses belonging to the Kalenjin community in Burnt Forest, Makutano, Maji Mazuri and Eldoret were burned and razed to the ground.
